If you handed this stone to ten people and asked them what they saw, I don’t think you’d get the same answer twice.

Somebody would call it sky.

Somebody else would swear it’s an ocean.

I’d tell you it’s the view from a mountain just before the sun burns the morning haze away.

That’s my favorite thing about turquoise.

The stone does half the storytelling, and your imagination does the rest.

Tillie John had the good sense not to fight it. She wrapped the cabochon in a clean twisted-wire frame, gave it a beautifully hand-stamped band, and stepped out of the way. The silver isn’t competing with the stone—it’s introducing it.

Every great ring has a centerpiece.

This one has a horizon.

Why This Piece Matters

Tillie John represents a tradition of Navajo silversmithing that values harmony over excess. Her work is rooted in the belief that exceptional turquoise deserves room to speak for itself. Instead of burying a beautiful stone beneath elaborate decoration, she uses classic techniques—hand stamping, twisted wire, and clean proportions—to elevate what nature has already created.

Blue Ridge turquoise is especially admired for its vivid blues and distinctive host rock, often producing stones that feel almost scenic. Collectors are drawn to it because every cabochon is unique; no two landscapes are ever painted the same.

This ring is a wonderful meeting of artist and material. Neither overshadows the other.

Curator’s Field Observation

The elongated oval cabochon displays a remarkable transition from saturated robin’s-egg blue into a soft band of pale host rock, creating a natural composition that immediately evokes distant horizons. A substantial smooth bezel and heavy twisted-wire border provide visual strength, while the wide band is richly hand stamped with traditional Navajo motifs that continue around the finger.

The ring has excellent balance. The bold stone draws the eye first, but the craftsmanship reveals itself slowly, rewarding a closer look with crisp stamp work and thoughtful proportions.

Eric’s Notes from the Field

I’ve realized something over the years.

The rings I keep reaching for aren’t always the loudest ones.

They’re the ones that give me something new every time I look down at my hand.

Sometimes it’s a color I hadn’t noticed.

Sometimes it’s a detail in the silver.

And sometimes it’s a stone that reminds me of a place I’ve never actually been.

Those are the pieces that stay with you.
